Such is the calling of doctors in our new China: To ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth, to secure life and fortune for the people, to continue unfinished teachings for past sages and to open a path to lasting peace for generations to come. As 2026 arrives, and I would like to tell a story from 77 years ago. She was born in Shaoxing in southern China and grew up in Shanghai in southern China. In 1945, she returned to a poor and war-torn China after studying in the United Kingdom and the United States. Introduced by her father, she joined the Communist Party of China. On January 10, 1949, the father and daughter took a train from Shanghai to Beiping (now Beijing), ready to take part in peace negotiations with representatives of Fu Zuoyi. Before them, three previous delegations had already sacrificed their lives. Before setting out, she had already prepared herself for death, so she made thorough preparations. She familiarized herself with the streets, local snacks, culture, and architecture of Beiping. She allowed herself to develop a deep affection for the city of Beiping, because otherwise, she felt she would never understand what she was dying for. Her very first arrival in this city was for the sole purpose of its peaceful liberation. In January 1949, one million soldiers of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) besieged the city without launching an attack, while 600,000 troops under Fu Zuoyi were stationed inside. Upon arriving at Qianmen Railway Station in Beiping, the father and daughter were encircled by dozens of secret agents. Her father was assassinated on the street, in broad daylight. During the more than twenty days in Beiping, she was imprisoned, escaped from jail, faced assassination attempts, fled for her life in the chaotic war-torn era, and survived against all the odds of death. Countless ordinary citizens, total strangers, risked everything to save her from danger. In the end, she survived. On January 31, 1949, Beiping was peacefully liberated. At that time, she was only a 25-year-old young woman. Yet she had accomplished something extraordinary and magnificent for our New China today. As 2026 arrives, let us bid farewell to the past and allow new beginnings to blossom. We are forever grateful to the countless predecessors whose bravery and sacrifice made it possible for us to have the New China today, A country where we have food to eat, clothes to wear, access to education, and a home to return to. A country where we can sit leisurely with our families, surrounded by the gentle glow of the lights. May each of us cherish, even more deeply, this beloved motherland of ours.
