Since 1889, the foundation of the Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in the second largest city, Hamburg, it has been one of the leading medical center in Europe.  In the ranking list The World’s Best Hospitals in Germany published by Newsweek, it reached the THIRD which rank only behind to Charité - Universit?tsmedizin Berlin and Universit?tsklinikum Heidelberg.

As one of the largest hospitals in Hamburg, it consists of  13 centers and over 80 clinics and institutes. With more than 11,000 employees, about 2,900 of them are medical specialists and researchers, while more than 3,400 work as nurses and therapist, the UKE is the third-largest employer in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The UKE has more than 1,436 beds and provides medical care to 104,000 inpatients and 413,816 outpatients including 129,000 emergency patients. The emphasis in UKE’s research are the neurosciences, cardio-vascular research, care research, oncology, as well as infections and inflammations.
